Each year the New Teacher Center (NTC) at the University of California, Santa Cruz, hosts a symposium dedicated to building a broad community of educators, researchers, and policy makers focused on creating high quality programs of new teacher support. At the January 2002 NTC Symposium, entitled Launching the Next Generation of Teachers, distinguished speakers from across the country shared their knowledge and expertise as it pertained to the conference themes of quality mentoring, the professionalization of teaching, and the equitable academic achievement of all students. This volume of proceedings captures the keynote and featured speaker addresses given at that event and represents an exciting and insightful addition to the literature on mentoring and teacher induction. Who Says Dreams Don't Come True? And When They Do, We Must Make a Note of Them

Fifty four educators came in school teams from 13 sites across United States and Canada to The Walker Center in Newton Mass where they spent 4 days from July 5th to 8th examining what it means to "put race on the table" in all aspects of their work as classroom teachers from Pre-K to 12, as school/ community/ parent liaisons, as diversity directors, as administrators, as student support personnel, as professional development specialists and as mentors of new teachers. Individuals from all of these schools had contact with Enidlee Consultants either through conferences or through on-site consultations at their schools where we have been working to create equity-centered classrooms with a focus on race, language, culture and power. When Enid Lee was awarded the degree of honorary Doctor of Laws at Queens University, Kingston, Ontario on October 26th, 2001, she accepted the degree on behalf of people of African descent everywhere and on behalf of teachers and the teaching profession which she described as the profession which makes all other professions possible.(more)
Taking Back Control: African Canadian Women Teachers' Lives and Practice Annette Henry
Taking Back Control is a ground-breaking investigation of the world and consciousness of five African Canadian women teachers. Their rich, textured narratives explore the contradictions in North American and "Western" education and the need for alternative standpoints and transformative strategies. Their engaged vision is presented as a means to discuss the limitations and possibilities of oppositional "minority" teacher standpoints in the mainstream, as well as alternative pedagogical strategies. Henry also discusses the literacy strategies employed in creating an environment in which African Canadian pupils can develop literacy skills and critically understand their identities as people of African heritage in North American society. She raises important issues for thinking about teaching from critical, informed, anti-racist perspectives.
